Aqueducts or Kariz were invented and developed by Iranians in the dry regions of Persia in the first millennium BC. This technology was an underground channel that carried fresh water several kilometers from mountain slopes to plains so that farmers and settlers in those areas could survive the long droughts. In 2017, 11 chains out of 37000 chains of live aqueducts in Iran were registered as cultural heritage sights by UNESCO. Despite that, approximately 1000 Iranian aqueducts go dry every year due to different reasons such as excessive use of their water reserves, lack of sewage systems, lack of proper maintenance operations, industrial projects carried out along the routes of aqueducts, global warming, and droughts.
Hadi Afarideh
Born in Tehran, Iran in 1984, Hadi Afarideh started his art career in theater in 1998 and in cinema in 2001 in the Iranian Youth Cinema Society. He was chosen as the best documentary filmmaker in the first specialized workshops of documentary filmmaking in Iran by the Documentary and Experimental Film Center and the Iranian Documentary Filmmakers Association in 2006. Hadi Afarideh has participated in more than 140 Iranian and international festivals and won various awards for the directing, writing, and research of his three short films Orange, Whistle, Father, and 19 documentaries Baghchehban Children, Under Pine Trees, Ceremony at Dawn, Gordafarid Story, Memory of Nei Avaran, Pale Childhood, Nozood, Veteran Rider, Nowruz Melody, Soorat Khani, Plain Grove, Offer, Nowruz Tehran Time, Lost Orchards, Paradises of Imagination, In Tehran Style, Ofus, Oblivion Migration and Iranian Pet Club. At present, he teaches cinema directing holds documentary filmmaking classes in Iranian Youth Cinema Society and Iranian Contemporary Arts Academy, and organizes documentary filmmaking workshops. At present, he is a member of the Iranian Documentary Filmmakers Association and the Iranian Short Film Association (ISFA).
